Little Italy Mercato

Little Italy MercatoThe Little Italy Mercato is one of the many outstanding events that take place in Little Italy, and this event takes place on a weekly basis.  Every Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Date Street between Kettner and Union, comes alive with more than 90 booths selling fresh produce, artisan foods and specialty items.  As a new mom, it’s one of my favorite places to shop for produce for my baby.  Many of the booths sell a variety of certified organic produce which make excellent baby food (and adult food too of course!)  There are also booths that sell fresh eggs, cheeses, fish and meats.

In addition to delicious, fresh produce, the artisan foods are amazing too!  I’ve enjoyed delectable desserts, smoked salmon, fresh baked breads, fresh pesto, olive medleys and more!  There are so many wonderful things to eat!  And there are booths that sell food cooked to order too – like delicious crepes!

Little Italy Mercato1It’s also a great place to buy fresh flowers and unique gifts.  For Christmas, I bought my mom a beautiful wine bottle holder painted with a replica of a Picasso from one of the vendors (he also sells beautiful wine bottle stoppers).  I also bought a great ceramic garlic grater and a garlic peeler, which have made cooking with garlic a lot easier.  Other gift options include ceramics, jewelry, apparel, tableware, pet products and more.  These booths are usually set up towards the east end of Date Street between State and Union, near Amici Park.

This Saturday come to Little Italy and take a stroll on Date Street.  Enjoy a cup of coffee, munch on a crepe and listen to the live music as you peruse the great variety of booths.  Just another jewel Little Italy has to offer – enjoy!
